The South Korea ESS

The Client

This Solar Power Plant in South Korea was constructed in January 2020 and involves two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Each BESS is 3m x 6m x 2.8m and has a total capacity of 1506.8KWh from Li-Ion batteries made by Samsung SDI.

Risks & Consequences

BESSs pose several safety risks including fire and extremely high heat release from Li-Ion batteries undergoing thermal runaway, as well as overpressure and toxicity due to batteries off-gassing. The South Korean BESS case is a success story where fire risks were calculated, and potential consequences were avoided due to early-stage fire detection and prompt activation of the FirePro generators.

The Task

The task was to design, install, commission, and maintain comprehensive protection of both BESSs against fire, taking into consideration the surrounding environment and varying weather conditions. A certified, reliable, resilient and compact fire protection system was required, capable of detecting fire at an early stage and preventing any implications of a potential thermal runaway propagation. Long after the BESSs installation and commissioning, a fire broke out in the battery control part of one BESS due to overheat inside the plastic module case. FirePro performed as designed and intended.

Why FirePro?

Results of Implementation

The FirePro agent successfully extinguished the fire in the battery control parts, halting its
advance towards the battery cells within the modules, thereby preventing thermal runaway.
The fire was timely out and affected only some battery control parts, with no spreading to
adjacent components. The BESS was effectively protected by the prompt intervention of the
FirePro system and no significant damage occurred. If it wasn’t for FirePro, the fire could be
catastrophic to the BESS, the Solar Plant electricity production as well as the environment.
