The Client

A mobility or electric scooter, is a power operated mobility aid ergonomically designed much like a motor scooter. It’s officially classified as a power-operated vehicle with a seat over three or four small rubber wheels. A battery pack is stored at the base of the scooter that can be charged using a standard electric household socket. The first mobility scooter was introduced in 1954 and was offered by the US retail giant Sears as an electric wheelchair.

Risks & Consequences

With an ageing population in the EU and a growing obesity epidemic in the US, the number of Mobility Scooter users is forecast to grow rapidly. A recent study puts the number of users in the UK alone, at around 350,000. BRE Trust and others have long recognised the fire risks related to mobility scooters - especially during charging. Equally, heat and smoke from a burning scooter intensifies the health risk for the same people they are meant to help.

The Task

With mobility scooters becoming more and more popular the associated fire risks need to be mitigated. R&D shows that mobility scooters need to be protected from the internally, especially while charging. Thus, the mission is to design and install a bespoke fire suppression system to protect the internal mechanisms of many mobility scooters. This called for an innovative, super compact and low maintenance automatic fire suppression system that should be precisely designed and certified according to the requirements of the tiny enclosed electric engine space.

Why FirePro?

FirePro technology is capable of extinguishing various classes of fire and can fit well in small enclosures such as the engine bay of these scooters. The FirePro Units utilised here have a very small footprint in terms of space requirement but with a high fire suppression efficiency making them an optimal solution. The technology`s compliance to numerous international standards, is certified by some of the most prestigious certification bodies and listing authorities around the globe. Overall, the modularity, efficiency and compactness of this “miniature” system ticked all the boxes for this application.

Results of Implementation

The client’s engineers utilized a commissioned FirePro fire suppression solution since it combined all the operational and technical parameters required for this particular product. FirePro Benelux personnel designed and completed the installation within hours. FirePro is now quietly protecting these machines and the people using them. In the case of a fire incident it will suppress fire and reduce danger to a minimum; while maintenance remains negligible.
